The Challenge

The previous system for student ID card check-in was very cumbersome and time-consuming for professors and students. One of the key reasons that make the check-in process so complex, is for professors to cross-check the students’ photos with their ID cards to avoid impersonation. In addition, the pandemic switched the teaching environment from physical classrooms to virtual remote classrooms, making it more complicated for professors to check student attendance. In addition, Students have to log in to University systems and Applications with multiple accounts (ID/Passwords), login credentials hacking and management are also a headache for both students and IT administrators.

• Classroom check-in by ID card is time-consuming and cumbersome for both professors and students.
• Remote classroom attendance is difficult to monitor and prevent impersonation
• Multiple login credentials for the University systems and applications are unsecured and difficult to manage.

Our Solution

After considering various options, the University opted for “ATKey.Card” – fingerprint-enabled card-type passkey, and build the new attendance check system with the FIDO2 server “AT.AuthFi”. This decision was based on several factors such as:

• The biometric fingerprint function makes impersonation impossible. Attendance reports can be generated automatically based on the rules set up by the Professors
• The card-type passkey can be printed as student badges, and work on both PC and mobile devices. Students can login into Microsoft365 accounts passwordless with the card.
• University systems can be more secure by integrating with the FIDO2 server (AT.AuthFi), which allows professors and students to login into applications passwordless. In addition, integration with AT.AuthFi is easy and fast based on readiness APIs and sample codes.

The Results

Our solution ensures the attendance check process is simple and un-cheatable, student attendance reports (absent, arriving late, etc.) can be generated automatically and correctly. The readiness APIs and sample codes make it easy to onboard AT.AuthFi (FIDO2 server), and make University web services login passwordless. Remembering passwords and being afraid of data leakage no longer be issues for students and professors.
